DeleteProminent Myanmar nationalist Buddhist monk Wirathu on Friday said the media has wrongly labeled him the “Burmese Bin Laden,” rejecting claims that he is responsible for a recent surge of communal violence against Muslims.Wirathu said his group was not responsible for the violence and rejected claims—including one recently made in the July issue of Time magazine—that he was a self-proclaimed terrorist waging a holy war against Myanmar’s Muslim minority.“[Time] referred to me as the ‘Burmese Bin Laden,’” Wirathu told Radio Free Asia’s Myanmar Service, referring to the name several media organizations say the 969 leader has himself used in the past.“I told their reporter when they came and met me that it was the Muslims who gave me this name. I didn’t refer to myself this way, but [Time] used this name in the story,” he said.
Myanmar’s President U Thein Sein has spoken out against the TIME magazine cover depicting radical monk U Wirathu as a “terrorist”, saying that the story is “detrimental to peace efforts between Myanmar’s religious groups.”
DeleteIn a statement released from the President’s Office on Sunday night, he decried the article as insensitive, saying that it has “damaged the reputation of Buddhism, which has been Myanmar’s main religion for thousands of years.”
The TIME article, entitled “The Face of Buddhist Terror” features a portrait of controversial monk U Wirathu. The monk has been accused of inciting anti-Muslim hatred through his ‘969’ movement that calls on Buddhist communities to boycott Muslim shops and businesses.
More recently, Sayadaw U Wirathu was behind draft legislation that would require Buddhist women to seek permission from their parents and local authorities before they were able to marry Muslim men. The interfaith marriage law would also require the Muslim groom to convert to Buddhism. The legislation caused outcry among human rights groups and was denounced by opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as “a violation of women’s and human rights.”
The statement from the President’s Office defended U Wirathu’s position in the Buddhist religion, claiming that monks are all subject to the 277 “moral rules or precepts.” He also reiterated Myanmar’s acknowledgement of the rightful existence of multiple religions, including Islam and Christianity.

DeleteThe article, currently banned in Myanmar, was on the cover of TIME magazine in the Asia Pacific on June 1, and detailed the growing popularity of the 969 movement that has been blamed for recent anti-Muslim violence.
In an open letter published on Wednesday, U Wirathu claims he treated both Beech and her photographer with hospitality, but that he "could not see deceit under [her] sweet words… like a blade covered by honey."
In the letter, he claims he has respect for the Western media, but that the TIME reporter misinterpreted his peaceful intentions. He reprinted the words he said he relayed to Beech at the interview, and claimed that the "hate speech" was fabricated.
Hannah Beech is TIME's East Asia Correspondent and China Bureau Chief. She was given a SOPA award for excellence in reporting following her 2009 coverage of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, and came to the country earlier this month to report on the 969 movement.
“I had told [Beech] that those names such as Shaved Head Nazi, Neo Nazi and Burmese Bin Laden were given to me by Muslims on Facebook. And then the liberal media dared to use the title ‘Burmese Bin Laden’,” said U Wirathu in his letter.
While U Wirathu claims it is not his intention to “make people’s blood boil”, his 969 movement has been blamed for inciting anti-Muslim hatred during unrest over the last eight months.
The movement encourages Buddhist shoppers to boycott Muslim businesses, an act which U Wirathu claims is more about protecting Buddhist interests than marginalizing Muslims.
During riots in Lashio that saw Muslim mosques, schools and businesses burned, the 969 label was spray-painted throughout the area. U Wirathu claims that he cannot be blamed for the unrest because he has requested that the label not be used for violence.
Despite this, his sermons—which have been recorded on both video and audio and now circulate the country—have been blamed for the unrest.
“My preaching is not burning with hatred as you say,” U Wirathu says to Beech in his open letter. He goes on to say that he will “forgive the misunderstanding” if she is willing to do an about-face on the article.
While the TIME cover has been formally banned in-country and condemned by Myanmar’s President as “detrimental to peace efforts”, the article has gained support from others as an indicator that Myanmar is opening up to the liberal media following decades of censorship.

ReplyDeleteBurmese President U Thein Sein has defended a Buddhist monk accused of fomenting a wave of anti-Muslim violence in the country.Thein Sein said the report undermined efforts to rebuild trust between faiths and that the monk's order was striving for peace and prosperity. "The government is currently striving with religious leaders, political parties, media and the people to rid Myanmar [Burma] of unwanted conflicts," it added. Burma's government is objecting to a Time Magazine article critical of an extremist monk who has been attacking Islam. Authorities deny they are defending the monk, U Wirathu, but said they are concerned the article could create problems after recent unrest between Buddhists and Muslims.But U Wirathu said the Time Magazine article is not against Buddhism, just against him. In an interview with the Irrawaddy Magazine he also alleges Muslim extremists are behind the article and planning to wage jihad, or holy war, against Burma.
U Thein Sein accused Time of slandering the Buddhist religion and harming the national reconciliation process by accusing the outspoken cleric of stoking anti-Muslim violence in Burma.Describing him as a “son of Buddha”, the president defended Wirathu as a “noble person” committed to peace. “The article in Time Magazine can cause misunderstanding about the Buddhist religion, which has existed for millennia and is followed by the majority of Burmese citizens,” U Thein Sein said.
I agree with you.News of the 1 July 2013 cover of Time has also stirred controversy on social media, where supporters of U Wirathu have set up a Facebook page calling for a boycott against the “lying, unjust” magazine. Meanwhile an online petition, which is pushing 50,000 signatures on Avaaz.org, is calling for Time to withdraw the edition.In an interview with DVB last week, Wirathu accused Time of committing a “serious human rights violation” by refusing to present his views in a verbatim question and answer format.“Before I had heard [rumours] of the Arab world dominating the global media,” he said. “But this time, I’ve seen it for myself.”
